Ausgangspunkt f\u00fcr die Komposition sind vier japanische Gedichte aus der Zeit um 1200. Die Musik folgt in ihrer inneren Skizzierung diesen kurzen lyrischen Texten, erw\u00e4chst aber durch Erweiterung und Wiederholung zur rein musikalischer Form. Diese lyrische Ausgangs-Formel jedes Satzes wird verbunden mit Ausschnitten einer \u00fcber 250 T\u00f6ne umfassenden, color-\u00e4hnlichen cantus-firmus-Reihe. Daraus entwickeln sich Satz und Harmonik. Oft werden die so entstandenen Abschnitte wieder mit einer neuen cantus-firmus-Schicht verwoben und fortgesponnen.<br> <br>Von den Gedichten sind in der Partitur nur die Titel \u00fcbrig geblieben. \u201eDer Wasservogel\u201c ist einer von mehreren bildhaften Neben-Namen des Aoba-Berges. Das Gedicht beschreibt den in sommerlicher Hitze K\u00fchle spendenden Berg als gemaltes Motiv auf einem Wandschirm, in dessen Schatten der Dichter das Atmen der Luft unter den gr\u00fcnen Bl\u00e4ttern des Bergwaldes gespiegelt sieht. \u201eDes Herrschers Leben\u201c beschw\u00f6rt in kraftvollen Worten das Leben des Herrschers als Ebenbild der Ewigkeit von Sonne und Mond. \u201eDer Tau der Wipfel\u201c ist ein Trauergedicht, in dem \u201edie Tropfen an der Wurzel der irdischen Welt\u201c zum lyrischen Bild f\u00fcr die Verg\u00e4nglichkeit werden.&nbsp; Zum 90.
